Jubal Bio
Josh (aka Jubal) had his first encounter with downtempo music in 1997. “I was home on break from college one night flipping through the tv when I ran across Saturday Night Live. There was a band performing with a dj, an orchestra, and an incredible singer whose tone was dark and melancholy. I was completely astounded by what I was seeing and hearing. It hit me in a way that no other music has before. I was left literally standing on my feet waiting to hear who this group was. A half hour later as the SNL hosts were wrapping up the show, one finally said, ‘Thank you to our musical guests: Portishead.’ The next morning I went out and bought Portishead’s Dummy album.”
Josh then embarked on his journey of collecting downtempo. He soon after purchased a set of turntables, and began digging endlessly for downbeat wax . Naturally, the discovery of one artist led to the next, and in finding Thievery Corporation and their Eighteenth Street Lounge, Josh realized what he wanted to do with djing - spin in unique settings where others can enjoy and appreciate not only the music itself, but the atmosphere it helps create. Hence, Josh’s music selection revolves around creating warmth and aura.
Josh’s focus as a dj is not to bring attention to himself, but rather to add to the positive vibes and energy that already flow at any given place. “My purpose in the events I'm involved with stem not only from my love of downtempo, but also from my desire to create evenings where we can experience the joy of having genuine moments with friends and others in an ideal setting, and be refreshed from all of life's jargon through it. My hopes are to contribute in bringing elements that make for times as such: people, atmosphere, conversation, and downtempo...”
